Welcome to mayeight.com, our cheesy little corner of the internet. We designed this place with the intent of our friends and family getting together and sharing images and stories with each other.

Since we travel so much, we’ve also included a calendar widget that will have our updated schedule so everyone will know where we are. You can even get your own calendar on our page and compare it to our schedule so we can plan meetings and stuff too!

Our gallery is probably our most used feature on the site, uploading bits and pieces of our lives in bulk to this location. The gallery page is for images, of course, broken up into different categories: Trips, Friends, Family, Random, House, Work and Studio. Feel free to upload your own pictures to share in this gallery as well, we’ve plenty of space and we can always get more.

We’re working on expanding the site to be more slick, personalized and user friendly so as we move along, feel free to drop suggestions as comments.

It’s so nice to carry on a family tradition now that we have our own family. Growing up after church on Sunday my family would go home and take a nap and just relax for a bit. With our hectic lives that are busy all the time it is really nice to come home this afternoon and lay down for a much needed nap! Sleeping backwards on the bed I can see the rain coming down outside the window from our bedroom. Both Minnie and Harley have joined in on our nap this rainy afternoon and it’s the first time in awhile that we can all enjoy each others company. I really enjoyed making the connection of our nap today back to the naps of my childhood. I feel so much joy in thinking that as our family grows we will be able to carry on such possibly mundane but special traditions in our lives. I will admit though that the storm outside does creep me out a bit!

On Friday we disembarked on our trip to Farmington, New Mexico. We’ve been traveling on a bus through Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Texas to reach our final destination. Looking out the windows I’m finding myself very surprised realizing I’ve never been to many of these states. They are very different from Florida. Seeing things like mountains and prairies and wind farms are alien to me. I’m used to orange groves and swamp and outlet malls. We passed through places that seemed like ghost towns, and others were bustling cities with very distinct landscapes. Tomorrow we enter red rock country which may as well be my first visit to any sort of desert. I’m looking forward to red earth and blue skies just as much as I am the mission work we are called to do. I suspect our travels this year may spark a true interest in discovering America. I only hope we are actually able.

Last week I went to lutherock for my very first time. It was AMAZING, I only wish I had experienced it growing up. George Kenny and I drove up eight middle schoolers a two day drive on the way up one on the way home. The kidos packed in gigantic bags which made me feel awesome about my small suitcase! On the way up we saw super retro gas pumps. It’s so different to go to summer camp as an adult especially an adult who is older than almost all of the conselours but much younger than the pastors. I really enjoyed the confirmation sessions we had with our jacmel (a place in Haiti. I can’t spell) group. I not only learned a lot from the pastors but also grew more in my faith during the week. Our theme for the confirmation week was keeping the earth. We taught the kidos that we were created in the image of god, that god has a covenant with us, that we are growing on a vine that needs to be pruned, that we need to hear the symphony that god has created for us and that we need to find our voice within the symphony of creation. It was truly an amazing week for me. One of my girls got hurt but I was able to be there for her and hopefully make the experience that much better for her. I participated in my first ropes course which was awesomeness. Up an uneven rope ladder, backwards across two logs, balance my way cross a rope wire, a leap of faith and then down a breathtaking zipline. Also, the conselours did an awesome play depicting the life of Jesus and it finished on a beautiful mountainside with three crosses. I had kenny pose for a picture on one I made new friends amoung our middle schoolers and I look forward to being a part of their lived going forward. I also made friends with some pretty awesome pastors and other lay people. Lutherock memories will stay with me forever and only built on my back in the day lutheridge memories from when I was a camper. There truly is nothing like having the opportunity to experience gods creation in such an awesome way!

When people ask me what I do for a living, I generally say “I do photography” before I’d say “I’m a photographer.”  As a business photography is very competitive and the barrier to entry is basically having a camera.  Part of what I enjoy about photography the most, probably is assisting other photographers.  You gain insight into the business and there are aspects about the BUSINESS of photography that are easy to forget.

Like delivering photos.

In 2010 people can take hundreds of photos and see them without ever having a hard copy, something that’s only come around in the last 10 years.  Seeing a printed 8 x 10 is such a rarity now.  This week I’m working with Scott Miller Photography as he takes photos for a Dance Studio in Lake Mary.  He’s pumping out images while I do sales.

SALES.

That’s right.  The business of photography requires you to sell images.  I keep forgetting that.  You have to market, sell and deliver images to do this right.  I’m getting very comfortable with the sales rap, and it’s a great situation for me in general because I have yet to sit down with someone who didn’t already have what they wanted to order in mind.

Scott’s been great.  He’s excellently business minded and a very experienced photographer.  I’m very lucky to have met him.  The requirements of photography are different than the requirements of business, but the two aren’t mutually exclusive.  Fundamental skills include being organized, sociable, efficient and creative.

The delivery of photos are critical to the success of a photography business and one of the reasons I’m working with Scott today is he is organize and efficient and ABLE to deliver the photos in a timely manner.  And it’s absolutely key to building a client base.

Last Friday George, his friend chris and chris’ sister Alyssa went to see the space shuttle launch. I like to think of it as a space ship so that is how it will be described from now on. I did most of the driving out to port canaveral along with what seemed like the rest of the world. We almost made it to our destination but traffic as it was we stopped on top of a bridge to watch the space ship launch. George and chris really enjoyed talking about the water that comes from the ship being launched, I semi grasp the concept. With my fear of bridges the lauch was actually still enjoyable surprisingly and we watched until we couldn’t see the ship anymore. Due to absurd amounts of traffic we continued our journey to the coast and stopped off at the pool bar at the Ron Jon surf shop resort. Who knew such a place existed. The drinks were quite fabulous I enjoyed my sunshine related drink but

Harley looks so cute sleeping on the couch. Too bad she has to have her toy right next to her just in case in her puppy dreams she decides to run away. Anyone who knows my baby girl knows she is toy obessed. Where did we go wrong and teach her that life is not life without her toys.

Minnie is curled up like a total baby. She likes to sleep no more than arms reach from me not like her mommy at all. She yawned and rolled onto her side to take her puppy nap for this hour. I love how she curls into a semi ball with her feet crossing over each other. She is just too cute!

I guess even sleeping my girls have their quirks.

So we’ve been coming to trivia night at R. G. Brewskis on Tuesday nights for a while now. We enjoy their giant buffalo chicken sandwiches, expanded draft beer selection and the loaded tots. Healthy, we know. On Mondays they have a $1 burger special we tried out.

The burgers start at $1 and each additional topping is $0.50. I was able to make a delicious burger with Swiss cheese, bacon and blue cheese dressing for $2.50, still on the cheap side. Melissa and I were able to eat burgers, tots and drink beer for just over $12, approximately what we’d spend at a fast food joint.

All this and watch the Magic game. Not bad.
